Month-Wise IISER Aptitude Test Plan
Month 1-2: NCERT Mastery + Scientific Thinking
Build an airtight NCERT foundation and develop scientific reasoning skills
- Complete NCERT Class 11 and 12 for Physics, Chemistry, Maths, and Biology
- The aptitude test covers all four subjects equally — you can't skip any
- Start reading popular science articles to build scientific temperament
- Practise old KVPY papers for the reasoning style (KVPY ended in 2022, but its papers are still useful)
Month 3-4: Beyond Textbook Preparation
Develop application-based thinking that the IAT tests
- Solve IISER Aptitude Test previous year papers (limited but essential)
- Practise old KVPY, NEST and Olympiad screening-level problems
- Focus on interdisciplinary questions — IISER loves connecting concepts across subjects

How do I get admission to an IISER?
Since 2024 the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is the only admission channel to the IISERs — the JEE Advanced, KVPY and State/Central Board channels were dropped.
What is the IAT exam pattern?
One computer-based paper of 60 questions — 15 each in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics — in 3 hours, with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. Rank is on the total out of 240, so prepare all four subjects.
How is the IISER Aptitude Test different from JEE or NEET?
The IAT focuses on scientific aptitude and reasoning rather than formula-heavy problem solving. Questions test whether you can think like a scientist — applying concepts to new situations, interpreting data, and connecting ideas across subjects.
What's the cutoff for IISERs?
Admission goes by IAT rank and your choice of IISER (Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal, Berhampur, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati), and closing ranks change every year. Check the IISER admissions site for previous-year data.
Are old KVPY papers useful for the IAT?
