What is NEST and who should take it?
NEST (National Entrance Screening Test) is the entrance exam for 5-year Integrated M.Sc. programmes at NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CEBS) Mumbai. If you want to pursue pure sciences at a research-oriented institute, NEST is the exam for you.
What is the NEST exam pattern?
The paper has four sections — Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics — with 20 MCQs each (60 marks per section), +3 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. Your best three section scores make your total, out of 180. It's a 3-hour computer-based test.
Is NEST harder than JEE Main?
NEST is different rather than harder. It tests deeper conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning rather than speed-based problem solving. Some questions are Olympiad-flavoured. If you enjoy thinking through problems rather than applying formulas, NEST may actually feel easier.
What score do I need for NISER?
Seats are limited and admission goes by merit rank, which changes every year. Check the NEST website for the previous year's closing ranks and aim to be comfortably inside them.
Can I prepare for NEST alongside JEE or NEET?
