CBSE Marking Scheme — How Examiners Give Marks

How CBSE examiners award marks: step-wise marking, internal assessment, practicals and the theory split for Class 10 and 12, plus the pass rules.

CBSE marks are split into two parts: theory exam (board exam) and internal assessment (school-level). For Class 10, most subjects are 80 marks theory + 20 marks internal = 100 total. For Class 12 Science subjects with practicals, it is 70 marks theory + 30 marks practical. Understanding this split matters because 20–30% of your marks come from internal assessment, practicals or projects, not the theory paper.

How CBSE Examiners Evaluate Answer Sheets

Understanding how your paper is checked helps you write better answers:

  1. Marking scheme is fixed: CBSE provides a detailed marking scheme to all examiners. Each answer has specific "marking points" — keywords, steps, or concepts that earn marks.
  2. Step-wise marks in Maths & Science: Each correct step gets marks independently. Even if your final answer is wrong, correct method + formula + substitution earn marks.
  3. Keyword scanning: For theory subjects, examiners look for specific keywords and phrases. Underlining key terms helps them spot your answer points quickly.
  4. Diagrams carry marks when asked for: If the question says "with the help of a diagram", the marking scheme allocates marks to the diagram and its labels.
  5. Quality control: Head Examiners and Additional Head Examiners randomly check evaluated answer books. In 2026, Class 12 answer books were marked on screen and the system added up the marks.

How to Maximise Marks in Each Component

ComponentMax Strategy
Theory Exam (70-80 marks)Follow the mark-wise answer format. Show all steps. Draw diagrams. Underline key terms. Attempt all questions — partial answers score marks.
Periodic Assessment (5 marks, Class 10)Take every test seriously and prepare specifically for each one.
Multiple Assessment (5 marks, Class 10)Take part in quizzes, projects and activities; they are assessed.
Portfolio (5 marks, Class 10)Keep classwork and assignments complete and neat through the year. Do not wait until the end.
Subject Enrichment (5 marks, Class 10)Participate actively in lab work, listening and speaking activities and projects.
Practicals (30 marks)Complete your practical file before the exam. Practise performing experiments. Know the theory behind each experiment for viva. Present your investigatory project clearly.

Passing Marks and Fail Criteria

  • Passing marks: at least 33% in each subject.
  • Class 10: CBSE relaxed the separate-pass rule in 2018, but its 2026-27 curriculum says 33% must be secured separately in external and internal components. Until CBSE clarifies, aim for at least 27/80 in theory and 7/20 in internal assessment.
  • Class 12 subjects with practicals: the theory and practical parts must each be passed — about 23 of 70 and 10 of 30. Check CBSE's current examination bye-laws for the exact rule.
  • Compartment: Class 10 students in the compartment category take the subject in the May second board exam. Class 12 has a supplementary exam in July.
  • No aggregate from CBSE: CBSE does not declare an overall percentage. Colleges and schools calculate one by their own rules (for Class 10, a best-five calculation including a skill subject is allowed). A passed sixth subject can replace a failed main subject under CBSE's rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are CBSE board exam marks calculated?

CBSE board exam marks = Theory exam marks + Internal assessment marks + Practical marks (where applicable). For Class 10, most subjects are 80 marks theory + 20 marks internal assessment = 100 total. For Class 12, subjects with practicals have 70 marks theory + 30 marks practical. Subjects without practicals have 80 marks theory + 20 marks internal assessment.

For Class 10, internal assessment (20 marks) has four parts of 5 marks each: Periodic Assessment, Multiple Assessment, Portfolio and Subject Enrichment. For Class 12 it varies by subject: a 30-mark practical exam in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and similar subjects, 20 marks of project work in subjects such as Accountancy, Economics and History, and 20 marks of internal assessment in Maths and English Core.

Schools award internal marks following CBSE's guidelines and upload them to CBSE. The marks should be based on documented work — tests, activities, portfolio and practical records — so ask your teacher if you think a mark is wrong before the school submits it.

Examiners follow CBSE's marking scheme, which gives marks for specific points, steps or keywords. In 2026, Class 12 answer books were scanned and marked on screen, question by question, with the system adding up the marks; Class 10 answer books were marked on paper. Head Examiners check samples of evaluated answer books. In 2026, the Class 10 main result came out on 15 April and the Class 12 result on 13 May.

Yes. CBSE Maths papers follow strict step-wise marking. Each correct step earns marks independently — even if the final answer is wrong, you get marks for correct method, formula, substitution, and intermediate steps. This is why showing all working is critical. A 5-mark question might have 5 separate marking points.

CBSE does not publish a fixed grace-marks rule for students. Do not rely on grace marks — prepare to score on your own.

Each subject has its own 30-mark scheme. Physics (2026-27): two experiments 7 + 7, practical record 5, one activity 3, investigatory project 3, viva 5. Chemistry: volumetric analysis 8, salt analysis 8, content-based experiment 6, project 4, class record and viva 4. Biology: major experiment 5, minor experiment 4, slide preparation 5, spotting 7, record and viva 4, project and viva 5. Practicals are held in school with an external examiner.

You need at least 33% in each subject. For Class 10, CBSE relaxed the separate-pass rule in 2018, but its 2026-27 curriculum says 33% must be secured separately in external and internal components. Until CBSE clarifies, play safe: aim for at least 27/80 in theory and 7/20 in internal assessment. In Class 12 subjects with practicals, the theory and practical parts must each be passed.
