How to Calculate Percentage from Marks

Formula

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

Example

If you scored 85 out of 100 in Maths and 78 out of 100 in Science:

Total obtained = 85 + 78 = 163

Total maximum = 100 + 100 = 200

Percentage = (163 ÷ 200) × 100 = 81.5%

Frequently Asked Questions

How to calculate percentage from marks?

Divide total marks obtained by total maximum marks, then multiply by 100. Formula: Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100. For example, if you scored 420 out of 500, your percentage is (420 ÷ 500) × 100 = 84%.

Add up all marks obtained across subjects, add up all maximum marks, then apply the formula: (Total Obtained ÷ Total Maximum) × 100. This gives your aggregate percentage.

Enter all six subjects above. The calculator shows your percentage across all six and, once you have six or more, your best-five percentage too — add the marks of your five highest-scoring subjects and divide by 500 (if each is out of 100), then multiply by 100.

No. CBSE marksheets show marks and a grade for each subject but no aggregate percentage, division or distinction. When a school, college or form asks for a percentage, it sets the rule — usually all subjects or your best five — so check which one it wants.

For CBSE Class 10 and 12 you need at least 33% in each subject; an overall percentage above 33% is not enough if one subject is below it. State boards set their own pass marks, often also 33–35% per subject.

No. Marks are the absolute numbers you scored (e.g., 85 out of 100). Percentage is the proportion expressed as a value out of 100, calculated using the formula (Marks ÷ Total) × 100.
