JEE Main vs JEE Advanced — Complete Comparison
Key differences between JEE Main and JEE Advanced — exam pattern, difficulty, colleges, eligibility, and which one you should target based on your goals.
JEE Main ranks are used for NITs, IIITs, other government-funded institutes and many state colleges. JEE Advanced is the entrance to the IITs (18,826 IIT seats through JoSAA 2026). Main tests speed and direct application; Advanced tests deep conceptual understanding with multi-step problems. You must clear Main first to attempt Advanced. This guide covers every difference and helps you decide which to target.

Admission through JoSAA depends on your rank against each programme's closing rank, which changes every year with category, quota, gender pool and home state. A rough rule for turning a JEE Main percentile into a rank: AIR ≈ (100 − percentile) × number of candidates ÷ 100. With 15.38 lakh candidates in 2026, that gives:
| JEE Main Percentile | Rough All India Rank (2026 pool) |
|---|---|
| 99.5 | ~7,700 |
| 99 | ~15,400 |
| 97 | ~46,000 |
| 95 | ~77,000 |
| 90 | ~1,54,000 |
For reference, these are real closing ranks (Open category, gender-neutral, as reported by Careers360):
| Programme | Closing Rank | Round |
|---|---|---|
| IIT Bombay CSE | AIR 67 (JEE Advanced) | JoSAA 2026 |
| IIT Delhi CSE | AIR 128 (JEE Advanced) | JoSAA 2026, final round |
| NIT Trichy CSE | AIR 1,449 (JEE Main) | JoSAA 2025 final round, Other-State quota |
| NIT Surathkal CSE | AIR 1,827 (JEE Main) | JoSAA 2025 final round, Other-State quota |
| NIT Warangal CSE | AIR 2,409 (JEE Main) | JoSAA 2025 final round, Other-State quota |
| NIT Rourkela CSE | AIR 3,431 (JEE Main) | JoSAA 2025 final round, Other-State quota |
| NIT Calicut CSE | AIR 5,222 (JEE Main) | JoSAA 2025 final round, Other-State quota |
Home-state quota, reserved categories and less competitive branches close at much higher ranks. Check the official opening and closing ranks on josaa.nic.in, or try our JEE college predictor.
Preparation Strategy — How to Cover Both
- Prepare for Advanced from Day 1 — it automatically covers Main. The reverse is not true.
- NCERT first — covers Main completely and provides the foundation for Advanced
- Reference books: H.C. Verma (Physics), Cengage (Maths), MS Chouhan + N. Avasthi (Chemistry) — covers both exams
- Practice Main-specific speed: 2 months before Main, solve full Main papers in 2.5 hours (not 3) to build speed buffer
- After Main: Switch to Advanced-specific preparation — multi-concept problems, paragraph-based questions, previous year Advanced papers
- PYQs are gold: Solve last 10 years of both Main and Advanced papers. Patterns repeat.
The Bottom Line
Prepare for Advanced-level from the start, but have a realistic plan for both outcomes. Getting NIT Trichy CSE through JEE Main is a fantastic outcome, with a strong placement record. IIT is the dream, but NIT is not a consolation prize. Focus on learning well, not just clearing a cutoff.
Candidate numbers are from NTA (JEE Main 2026) and IIT Roorkee (JEE Advanced 2026 result, 1 June 2026); JoSAA 2026 seat numbers and closing ranks are as reported by Careers360. The percentile-to-rank rule is a rough estimate. Check josaa.nic.in and jeeadv.ac.in for official figures.

What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main ranks are used for NITs, IIITs and other government-funded institutes through JoSAA (48,372 seats in 2026), and by many state and private colleges. JEE Advanced is the entrance to the IITs (18,826 IIT seats through JoSAA 2026). JEE Main is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced — you must be among the top 2,50,000 JEE Main (B.E./B.Tech) candidates to be eligible. Advanced is significantly harder, with different question types.
Is JEE Advanced much harder than JEE Main?
Yes, significantly. JEE Main tests straightforward concept application and speed. JEE Advanced tests deep conceptual understanding with multi-step, multi-concept problems. Many JEE Main 99 percentile scorers find Advanced very challenging. The difficulty jump is roughly equivalent to moving from Class 12 level to competitive Olympiad level in some questions.
Should I prepare for JEE Main or JEE Advanced?
Prepare for JEE Advanced from the start — it automatically covers JEE Main. Advanced preparation builds deeper understanding that makes Main easier. If you only prepare for Main, you will not be ready for Advanced. Even if you ultimately only qualify for NITs, Advanced-level preparation gives you an edge in JEE Main.
Can I get into a good college with just JEE Main?
Yes. Top NITs such as Trichy, Warangal and Surathkal have strong placement records, and several IIITs do too — check each institute's official placement report rather than headline figures. JEE Main ranks are also used by colleges such as DTU and NSUT (through JAC Delhi) and many state colleges. You do not need an IIT for a great engineering career.
How many students qualify for JEE Advanced from JEE Main?
The top 2,50,000 JEE Main (B.E./B.Tech) candidates, across categories, are eligible for JEE Advanced. In 2026, 15.38 lakh candidates took JEE Main, so roughly the top 16% became eligible. For JEE Advanced 2026, 1,87,389 registered, 1,79,694 sat both papers and 56,880 qualified; JoSAA 2026 offered 18,826 IIT seats.
Do I need to clear JEE Main to give JEE Advanced?
Yes. JEE Main is a mandatory prerequisite for JEE Advanced. You must be among the top 2,50,000 JEE Main candidates (about the top 16% in 2026) to be eligible. To take an IIT seat you also need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board.
Is NIT better than lower-ranked IITs?
Top NITs (NIT Trichy CSE, NIT Warangal CSE) have placements comparable to or better than some newer/lower-ranked IITs. The IIT brand carries more weight for non-CSE branches. For CSE specifically, top NITs vs newer IITs is a close comparison. Choose based on specific college+branch placement data, not just the IIT/NIT label.
Can I attempt JEE Advanced more than once?
You can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times in 2 consecutive years. For JEE Advanced 2026 you had to have taken Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026, and be born on or after 1 October 2001 (1 October 1996 for SC, ST and PwD candidates). Check the 2027 criteria on jeeadv.ac.in when they are published.
