JEE Main vs JEE Advanced — Complete Comparison

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced complete comparison. Difficulty level, syllabus, exam pattern, scoring, and which colleges accept which exam.

JEE Main gets you into NITs. JEE Advanced gets you into IITs. Here is a complete comparison to understand both exams.

Key Differences

  • Difficulty — JEE Main is moderate. JEE Advanced is significantly harder with multi-concept problems.
  • Question types — Main has MCQs + numerical. Advanced adds matrix match, paragraph-based, multi-correct.
  • Papers — Main has 1 paper (3 hours). Advanced has 2 papers (3 hours each).
  • Attempts — Main allows 3 consecutive years. Advanced allows 2 consecutive years.
  • Colleges — Main: NITs, IIITs, GFTIs. Advanced: 23 IITs only.

Syllabus Comparison

The syllabus is the same (NCERT Class 11+12), but JEE Advanced tests concepts at a much deeper level. A JEE Main question tests formula application. A JEE Advanced question tests whether you can combine 2–3 concepts in a single problem.

Which Should You Focus On?

  • Target IIT — prepare for Advanced from the start. Main preparation is a subset.
  • Target NIT — focus on Main. It has a more predictable pattern and is easier to crack.
  • Not sure — prepare for Main first. If your score is strong, transition to Advanced prep.
