JEE vs NEET — Engineering vs Medical Career Path

JEE or NEET? Compare the two exams, the courses they lead to, preparation, training length and careers, and how to choose between engineering and medicine.

JEE (engineering) or NEET (medicine) — the two exams lead to very different courses, training timelines and careers. This guide compares the exams, what comes after them and how to decide which path fits your child.

Key Differences at a Glance

Exam details below are from the 2026 information bulletins; check the 2027 bulletins when they come out.

JEENEET
Leads toB.E./B.Tech at IITs (through JEE Advanced), NITs, IIITs and other collegesMBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses such as BAMS and BHMS
SubjectsPhysics, Chemistry, MathsPhysics, Chemistry, Biology
PaperJEE Main: 75 compulsory questions, 300 marks, 3 hours, +4 / −1. JEE Advanced: two compulsory 3-hour papers180 compulsory questions (Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Biology 90), 720 marks, 3 hours, +4 / −1
ModeComputer-basedPen-and-paper in 2026; computer-based from 2027 (announced by the Centre)
AttemptsJEE Main in the year of Class 12 and the next two years (two sessions a year); JEE Advanced at most twice, in consecutive yearsNo attempt limit and no upper age limit
Candidates (2026)15.38 lakh sat JEE Main22.8 lakh registered; about 20 lakh sat the 21 June re-exam
CounsellingJoSAA (IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs), then CSAB and state counsellingMCC (All India Quota and central seats) and state counselling
Course length4 years (B.Tech)5.5 years (MBBS, including a one-year internship)

One more rule: IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs admit only students with 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or a top-20-percentile score in their board, so board marks matter on the JEE side too.

Preparation

  • JEE rewards problem-solving depth, especially in Maths and Physics. JEE Advanced, for the IITs, is a big step up from JEE Main.
  • NEET is closely tied to NCERT, especially in Biology, and rewards accuracy and speed — 180 questions in 180 minutes. Biology is half the paper.
  • Both are best prepared over two years (Class 11 and 12), and both mix Class 11 and Class 12 topics.

After the Exam: Courses and Careers

  • Engineering: a 4-year degree, then a job, higher studies (M.Tech through GATE, MS abroad) or a switch into areas such as management. Outcomes vary widely with the college and branch.
  • Medicine: 5.5 years of MBBS, and most doctors then compete again (NEET PG or INI-CET) for postgraduate seats to specialise. The path is longer and more demanding, and earnings usually start later.

Who Should Choose What?

  • Choose JEE if your child enjoys Maths and solving hard problems, and is drawn to building, coding or designing things.
  • Choose NEET if your child enjoys Biology, wants to work with patients, and is ready for a long training path.
  • Still undecided after Class 10? Take PCMB in Class 11 if the school offers it, and decide by the middle of Class 11.
  • Avoid choosing for status or family pressure — two years of preparation needs genuine interest.

The Verdict

Neither path is better in general. The right one is the one that matches your child's interests and strengths. Talk it through early, ideally before choosing Class 11 subjects, and revisit the decision halfway through Class 11.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is harder, JEE or NEET?

They are hard in different ways. JEE Main, and especially JEE Advanced, test deep problem-solving in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. NEET rewards thorough NCERT knowledge, accuracy and speed across 180 questions in 3 hours, with Biology making up half the paper. The right question is which subjects your child enjoys and is strong in.

In Class 11, yes — taking PCMB (Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology) keeps both doors open, if the school offers it. By Class 12 it is better to commit to one exam, because the two need different practice: JEE needs Maths and problem depth, NEET needs Biology recall and speed.

A B.Tech takes 4 years. MBBS takes 5.5 years including a one-year compulsory internship, and most doctors then spend more years on postgraduate training to specialise. So medicine usually means a longer path before independent earning.
