5 Tips for College Selection
- Government > Private. Government college at ₹30,000/year gives the same MBBS degree as a private college at ₹20 lakh/year. Always prefer government.
- Check NMC recognition. Ensure the college is recognised by the National Medical Commission. Unrecognised colleges mean your degree may not be valid.
- Hospital matters. A medical college attached to a 500+ bed hospital provides better clinical training than one with a small hospital.
- Pass percentage. Check the college's pass percentage in NEXT/exit exams. Low pass rates indicate poor teaching quality.
- Always participate in mop-up rounds. Cutoffs drop 30–50 marks. Students who "settle" early often miss better options in later rounds.
Score ranges based on MCC and state counselling data from 2024–2025. Actual 2026 cutoffs will depend on paper difficulty and candidate count. Fee structures change annually. Always verify NMC recognition status at nmc.org.in. Last updated: February 2026.

What college can I get with 500 marks in NEET?
With 500 marks (General): government medical colleges in some states through state quota (Bihar, UP, MP, Rajasthan). Deemed universities like SRM, Saveetha. Private colleges in most states. For OBC at 500: government colleges in more states become available. For SC/ST at 500: good government colleges through AIQ and state quota.
What NEET score is needed for AIIMS Delhi?
AIIMS Delhi MBBS typically requires 700+ marks (AIR under 50–100). For other AIIMS institutes: AIIMS Jodhpur/Bhopal/Rishikesh need 680–700 (AIR 200–1,500). Newer AIIMS (Mangalagiri, Gorakhpur, etc.) need 660–680 (AIR 1,500–5,000). These are for General category — OBC/SC/ST cutoffs are lower.
Can I get a government college with 400 marks in NEET?
For General category: very unlikely through AIQ, but possible through state quota in a few states (especially North-Eastern states, J&K) in mop-up rounds. For SC/ST at 400: government colleges are possible in several states. For OBC at 400: limited government options but deemed universities and some state colleges are possible.
What is the difference between AIQ and state quota colleges?
AIQ (All India Quota): 15% of government seats filled through MCC centralised counselling at mcc.nic.in. Cutoffs are higher because candidates from all over India compete. State Quota: 85% of government seats filled through state counselling. Cutoffs are lower because only state domicile candidates compete. You should register for BOTH.
Are private medical colleges worth the fee?
It depends on the college. Good private colleges (Kasturba Manipal, SRM, Amrita) have quality education and decent placements. Fee: ₹10–25 lakh/year (total ₹50 lakh–₹1.25 crore for MBBS). Consider: (1) NMC recognition status, (2) hospital facilities, (3) pass percentage in NEXT/exit exam, (4) faculty quality. Avoid unrecognised or poorly rated colleges regardless of fee.
How to check previous year NEET cutoffs for specific colleges?
For AIQ colleges: mcc.nic.in → Opening & Closing Ranks (last 3 years). For state colleges: check your state medical counselling website. For deemed: individual university websites. For private: check state-level counselling portals. The closing rank of the last round is most relevant — it shows the minimum score at which admission was possible.
