7.1 Describing Motion

  • Motion is the change in position of an object with respect to time and a reference point
  • A reference point (origin) is essential to describe the position of any object
  • Objects can appear to be in motion for one observer and at rest for another (relative motion)

7.1.2 Uniform and Non-uniform Motion

  • Uniform Motion: Object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time
  • Non-uniform Motion: Object covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time
  • Time intervals considered should be small for accurate description

  • Speed measures how fast an object moves - distance covered per unit time
  • SI unit of speed is m/s or ms⁻¹, other units include cm/s and km/h
