Best Books for CBSE Class 12 — Subject Wise
Best books for the CBSE Class 12 Board exams 2027: NCERT first, then subject-wise reference books for Science and Commerce, and how to use them well.
NCERT is essential for the CBSE Class 12 Board exams 2027. A well-chosen reference book adds practice in the subjects where you need it most. Here are common choices, subject by subject.
Science Stream
- Physics — NCERT and NCERT Exemplar first. S.L. Arora for board-style practice; H.C. Verma if you are also preparing for JEE.
- Chemistry — NCERT is the core, especially for inorganic chemistry. JEE aspirants often add problem books such as M.S. Chauhan (organic) and N. Awasthi (physical).
- Maths — NCERT and NCERT Exemplar, then R.D. Sharma or R.S. Aggarwal for extra practice.
- Biology — NCERT line by line. Trueman's is a popular supplement for extra MCQs.
Commerce Stream
- Accountancy — T.S. Grewal — the standard reference after NCERT.
- Business Studies — NCERT is sufficient for most students.
- Economics — Sandeep Garg's books on Macroeconomics and Indian Economic Development (the two Class 12 parts) for extra explanation and practice.
Important Rule
- Complete NCERT 100% first — no exceptions.
- Use reference books only for extra practice, not as primary material.
- The CBSE sample papers and recent board papers matter more than any reference book.
- Skip topics that are no longer in the 2026-27 syllabus — older reference books may still include them.
- Do not buy too many books — 1 reference per subject is enough.

Is NCERT enough for CBSE Class 12?
NCERT is the base, and most board questions are built on it. For top marks, add NCERT Exemplar, the 2026-27 CBSE sample papers and recent board papers; a reference book helps most in Physics, Maths and Accountancy, where extra practice pays off.
Should I buy a sample paper book?
Start with the free official CBSE sample papers and recent board papers. If you want more practice after those, one sample-paper book from a publisher is plenty — check that it follows the 2026-27 pattern.
