Chemistry (70 + 30 practical)
| Section | Marks | Chapters and strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | 23 | Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics — formula-based; practise numericals. |
| Inorganic | 14 | d- and f-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds — read NCERT closely; practise IUPAC names. |
| Organic | 33 | Haloalkanes to Biomolecules — the largest section. Name reactions, mechanisms and conversions. |
Solid State and p-Block Elements are not in the syllabus; Surface Chemistry and Polymers are assessed only by your school.
Mathematics (80 + 20)
| Unit | Marks | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Calculus | 35 | Nearly half the paper. Practise integration methods and applications of derivatives. |
| Vectors and 3D Geometry | 14 | Formula-based; practise line and plane questions. |
| Algebra (Matrices, Determinants) | 10 | Inverse of a matrix, solving systems of equations. |
| Relations and Functions | 8 | One-one, onto, inverse trigonometric functions. |
| Probability | 8 | Conditional probability and Bayes' theorem. |
| Linear Programming | 5 | Graphical method — still in the 2026-27 syllabus. |
Biology (70 + 30 practical)
Genetics and Evolution (20) is the largest unit, then Reproduction (16), Biology and Human Welfare (12), Biotechnology (12) and Ecology (10). Practise labelled diagrams and NCERT-based reasoning questions.

| Subject | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Accountancy (80 + 20 project) | Part A (partnership and company accounts) is 60 marks, Part B (analysis of financial statements and cash flow) 20. Practise full questions regularly — one wrong entry can affect a whole answer. |
| Business Studies (80 + 20 project) | Part A (management) 50, Part B (finance and marketing) 30. Make mind maps per chapter and practise case-based answers. |
| Economics (80 + 20 project) | Macroeconomics 40 and Indian Economic Development 40. Learn national income and money-multiplier numericals, draw the income-determination diagrams, and use Indian examples. |
| Maths (80 + 20) | Same syllabus as Science Maths; Calculus is 35 marks. Applied Mathematics is a separate subject with its own syllabus. |
Humanities Stream
| Subject | Strategy |
|---|---|
| History (80 + 20 project) | Themes in Indian History, Parts I–III. Make timelines and practise source-based questions; map work is 5 marks. |
| Political Science (80 + 20 project) | Contemporary World Politics and Politics in India since Independence. Use examples and compare concepts clearly. |
| Geography (70 + 30 practical) | Fundamentals of Human Geography and India: People and Economy, with map work in each. Practise diagram- and data-based answers. |
| Psychology (70 + 30 practical) | Learn theories with the psychologists behind them and practise case-based answers. |
Practical Exams (30 Marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology)
- Keep your practical record complete — it carries marks in every science subject.
- Practise the experiments in the syllabus until you can do them on your own.
- Prepare your investigatory project — a clear question, method, observations and conclusion.
- Prepare for the viva — know why each step is done, not just how.
- Work methodically on the day — label everything and show your calculations.
Subjects without practicals, such as Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, History and Political Science, have 20 marks of project work instead.
Marks from the CBSE Senior Secondary Curriculum 2026-27 and the 2026-27 sample question papers (cbseacademic.nic.in). IIT admission criteria from jeeadv.ac.in.

How should I prepare for the CBSE Class 12 board exams?
Start with NCERT — every chapter, solved example and exercise. Then practise the 2026-27 CBSE sample papers and recent board papers under timed conditions. In science subjects, keep your practical record and project up to date through the year. Make formula and diagram sheets and revise them regularly in the last two months.
Is NCERT enough for CBSE Class 12?
NCERT is the base, and most board questions are built on it. But every paper is now 50% competency-based, so you also need practice applying ideas — NCERT Exemplar, the CBSE sample papers and recent board papers help. Finish NCERT thoroughly before adding reference books.
How do I score 95%+ in CBSE Class 12?
Know NCERT thoroughly, solve all exercises and Exemplar problems, practise recent board papers and the sample papers under timed conditions, prepare well for practicals or project work, and work on presentation — labelled diagrams, key terms underlined and step-by-step working.
How do I balance board exams and JEE or NEET?
Much of the JEE Main and NEET syllabus overlaps with Class 11 and 12 NCERT. Learn each topic for the board first, then solve entrance-level questions on the same topic. In the last few months before the boards, give the board syllabus priority, then switch fully to entrance preparation after your last paper.
Which is the hardest subject in CBSE Class 12?
It depends on you. Many Science students find Maths and Physics hardest, and many Commerce students find Accountancy the most time-consuming. Give more time to whichever subject you personally find hardest.
How many hours should I study for Class 12?
There is no single right number. Many students build up from a few focused hours a day early in the year to longer days near the exams. Focused hours with short breaks beat long distracted days.
Do CBSE Class 12 marks matter for college admission?
Yes. IITs, NITs and other centrally funded institutes need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. Universities admitting through CUET set their own Class 12 eligibility conditions, and many scholarships also look at board marks.
How do I prepare for Class 12 practicals?
Keep your practical record complete through the year, practise the experiments in the syllabus until you can do them on your own, prepare a proper investigatory project, and learn the theory behind each experiment for the viva. Practicals are 30 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
