JEE Main Chapter Wise Weightage — Physics, Chemistry, Maths

JEE Main chapter-wise weightage for Physics, Chemistry and Maths — approximate estimates from recent papers (NTA publishes none) and how to prioritise.

NTA does not publish chapter-wise weightage. The figures on this page are approximate estimates from recent JEE Main papers — use them to prioritise, not as a promise of what your paper will contain. By these estimates, Mechanics (~28–32 marks), Calculus (~24–28 marks) and Physical Chemistry (about a third of Chemistry) are among the highest-weightage groups. Each subject has 25 questions (100 marks), and every wrong answer costs −1, MCQ or numerical. Topics NTA removed from the syllabus for 2024 are left out.

Physics — Chapter Wise Weightage (100 marks)

Chapter / TopicApprox. QuestionsApprox. MarksPriority
Mechanics (Kinematics, NLM, WEP, Rotational, Gravitation)7–828–32Must Do
Electrostatics & Current Electricity4–516–20Must Do
Magnetism & EMI3–412–16Must Do
Modern Physics (Dual Nature, Atoms, Nuclei, Electronic Devices)3–412–16High

Thermodynamics & KTG2–38–12High
Waves & Oscillations1–24–8Medium
Properties of Matter (Fluid, Elasticity)1–24–8Medium
Units & Measurements, Experimental Skills14Easy marks

Key insight: By these estimates Mechanics alone is ~30% of Physics, and Mechanics + Electrodynamics + Modern Physics together cover roughly 60–70% of Physics marks. Electromagnetic Waves is also in the syllabus, so don't skip it.

Chemistry — Chapter Wise Weightage (100 marks)

Physical Chemistry (about a third of Chemistry)

ChapterApprox. QuestionsApprox. MarksPriority
Mole Concept & Stoichiometry1–24–8Must Do
Atomic Structure1–24–8Must Do
Chemical Bonding1–24–8Must Do
Thermodynamics & Thermochemistry1–24–8Must Do

Organic Chemistry (about a third of Chemistry)

ChapterApprox. QuestionsApprox. MarksPriority
GOC (General Organic Chemistry)1–24–8Must Do
Hydrocarbons (Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, Aromatic)1–24–8Must Do
Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers14High
Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic Acids1–24–8High
Amines & Diazonium Salts14High
Biomolecules14Medium

Purification & Characterisation of Organic Compounds and Principles Related to Practical Chemistry are also in the syllabus — usually small, but quick marks if you have read them.

Inorganic Chemistry (about a quarter to a third of Chemistry)

ChapterApprox. QuestionsApprox. MarksPriority
p-Block Elements (Groups 13–18, general trends)2–38–12Must Do
d-Block & f-Block Elements1–24–8Must Do
Coordination Compounds1–24–8Must Do
Chemical Bonding (Inorganic context)14High

Classification of Elements & Periodicity is also in the syllabus and often tested alongside bonding. s-Block Elements, Metallurgy (isolation of metals), Hydrogen and Environmental Chemistry were removed for JEE Main 2024, so they no longer carry any marks.

Mathematics — Chapter Wise Weightage (100 marks)

Chapter / UnitApprox. QuestionsApprox. MarksPriority
Calculus (Limits, Differentiation, Integration, Differential Equations)6–724–28Must Do
Algebra (Matrices, Determinants, P&C, Probability)5–620–24Must Do
Coordinate Geometry (Straight Lines, Circles, Conics)4–516–20Must Do
Trigonometry (Identities, Functions, Inverse Trigonometric Functions)2–38–12High
Vectors & 3D Geometry (lines in space)2–38–12High
Sets, Relations & Functions1–24–8High
Sequences & Series14Medium
Complex Numbers14Medium

Key insight: By these estimates Calculus + Coordinate Geometry + Algebra make up roughly 65% of Maths. Master these three first. Mathematical Reasoning and Mathematical Induction are no longer in the syllabus.

How to Use This Weightage Data

  1. Phase 1 (Foundation): Start with "Must Do" chapters in all 3 subjects. By these estimates they cover roughly 60% of the paper.
  2. Phase 2 (Expansion): Add "High" priority chapters. You are now covering most of the paper (roughly 85%, estimate).
  3. Phase 3 (Completion): Cover "Medium" and "Low" chapters. Full syllabus coverage for 250+ targets.
  4. Revision priority: Always revise "Must Do" chapters first. If short on time, skip "Low" priority revision.
  5. Mock test analysis: After every mock, check if your mistakes are in high-weightage chapters. If yes, prioritise fixing those gaps immediately.

Weightage figures are approximate estimates from recent JEE Main papers — NTA does not publish chapter weightage, and individual shifts can differ widely. Chapters follow NTA's official JEE Main 2026 syllabus. Use this as a guide for prioritisation, not as a guarantee of exact question distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which chapters have the highest weightage in JEE Main?

NTA does not publish chapter weightage, so any list is an estimate from past papers. Roughly: Mechanics (~28–32 marks in Physics), Calculus (~24–28 marks in Maths), Electrodynamics (~24–28 marks in Physics), Coordinate Geometry (~16–20 marks in Maths), and Physical and Organic Chemistry (about a third of Chemistry each). Individual shifts can differ a lot.

NTA's official syllabus has 54 units: Physics 20, Chemistry 20 and Mathematics 14. Aim to cover all of them — questions can come from any unit. If time is short, start with the high-weightage chapter groups in the tables below (estimates), then fill in the rest.

The broad distribution is fairly similar from year to year, with Mechanics, Calculus and Physical Chemistry usually among the biggest groups. But the count per chapter varies from shift to shift, and NTA sometimes asks more from usually low-weightage chapters. That is why covering the full syllabus matters for high targets.

No chapter should be completely skipped, but if you are short on time, these typically carry only a question or two: Statistics, EM Waves, Experimental Skills and Principles of Practical Chemistry. They are also among the easiest marks. Mathematical Reasoning, Communication Systems, Surface Chemistry and s-Block are no longer in the JEE Main syllabus at all, so don't spend time on them.

Allocate study time proportional to weightage: 40% of time on high-weightage chapters (Calculus, Mechanics, Physical Chemistry), 35% on medium-weightage, and 25% on low-weightage. During revision, spend 60%+ time on high-weightage topics. In mock tests, always attempt high-weightage chapter questions first.

The chapter distribution is roughly similar across sessions, but individual papers can vary. One session might have 4 Mechanics questions while another has 3. Over many papers the counts average out to roughly the ranges shown here, which are estimates, not NTA data. Preparing the whole syllabus, high-weightage chapters first, covers you for both sessions.
