JoSAA Counselling Process Overview

JoSAA counselling flow — from result to admission

Who Can Participate in JoSAA?

Institution TypeCountEligibility
IITs23JEE Advanced qualified + JEE Main qualified
NITs31JEE Main qualified (Paper 1 for B.Tech)
IIITs26JEE Main qualified
GFTIs34+JEE Main qualified

Key point: IITs require JEE Advanced rank. NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs use JEE Main rank. You can get allotments from both categories if you have qualified both exams.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Registration (Online)

  • Visit josaa.nic.in after JEE Advanced results are declared
  • Login using JEE Main application number and password
  • Verify your personal details, category, and rank
  • Upload any additional documents requested
  • Registration is free — no payment at this stage

Step 2: Choice Filling (Most Critical Step)

This is where most students make or break their admission. You can fill up to 100+ choices in order of preference.

  • Research thoroughly: Use official JoSAA data (josaa.nic.in → Opening & Closing Ranks) from previous years
  • Priority order matters: List your dream college-branch combination first, then realistic options, then safety choices
  • Include safety choices: Add 20–30 choices that are below your rank — this ensures you get at least something
  • Branch vs College: For top NITs, CSE at a Tier-2 NIT may be better than Civil at a Tier-1 NIT. Research placements before deciding.
  • Home state quota: If you have home state quota at an NIT, add those choices — cutoffs are significantly lower for home state seats (typically 20–30% lower rank)

Step 3: Seat Allotment Rounds

RoundWhat HappensTypical Timeline
Round 1First allotment based on rank + choices. Most seats filled here.Late June
Round 2Vacant seats (from Round 1 withdrawals) + new allotments. Choices can be rearranged.Early July
Round 3Further vacancies filled. Cutoffs may drop slightly.Mid July
Round 4Fewer seats available. Mostly for candidates who float/slid from earlier rounds.Late July
Round 5Final round. Last chance for upgradation.Late July
Special RoundFor unfilled seats. Fresh choice filling allowed.August

Step 4: Respond to Allotment

After each round, if you get a seat, you must choose one of these options within the deadline (usually 2–3 days):

OptionWhat It MeansWhen to Use
FreezeAccept this seat. Exit counselling. No further upgradation. When you get your top choice or are satisfied
FloatAccept this seat but stay in counselling for ANY higher preference. When you want to try for a better college OR branch
SlideAccept this seat but stay in counselling for better branch at SAME institute only. When you like the college but want a better branch there

Pro tip: Choose "Float" in early rounds unless you get your top choice. This keeps your options open while securing a seat. You can always Freeze in a later round.

Step 5: Pay Seat Acceptance Fee & Document Verification

  • Pay online: ~₹35,000 (General/OBC) or ~₹15,000 (SC/ST) — within the deadline
  • Visit Reporting Centre (RC): Physical document verification at a designated centre. Bring ALL originals + photocopies.
  • Documents needed: JEE scorecard, Class 10 & 12 marksheets, category certificate, photos, ID proof, medical certificate
  • If documents are incomplete: You may be given a provisional admission with a deadline to submit remaining documents. Do NOT miss this deadline.

5 Tips to Maximise Your JoSAA Outcome

  1. Fill maximum choices. There is no penalty for filling more choices. Fill 80–100+ choices to maximise your chances. Many students regret not adding enough safety options.
  2. Use previous year data. Download Opening & Closing Ranks from josaa.nic.in for the last 3 years. Your allotment will be close to these historical patterns.
  3. Don't ignore home state quota. NITs reserve 50% seats for home state candidates. If your NIT is in your home state, add those choices — cutoffs are significantly lower.
  4. Branch matters more than you think. CSE/IT at a Tier-2 NIT often has better placements than Mechanical/Civil at a Tier-1 NIT. Research placement data before ranking choices.
  5. Always choose Float in early rounds. Unless you get your #1 choice, always Float. You lose nothing — if a better seat opens up, you get upgraded automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is JoSAA counselling?

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the centralised counselling process for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutions). It uses your JEE Main and/or JEE Advanced rank to allot seats across 114+ institutions. JoSAA conducts 5–6 rounds of seat allotment. Registration and choice filling are done online at josaa.nic.in.

JoSAA typically conducts 5–6 rounds of seat allotment. Round 1 has the most seats. Each subsequent round has fewer seats (from withdrawals and unfilled seats). After JoSAA rounds, there may be additional special rounds and CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) rounds for NITs and IIITs specifically. Total process takes 4–6 weeks.

After Round 1 allotment, you have 3 options: (1) Freeze — accept the allotted seat and exit counselling, (2) Float — accept the seat but stay in counselling for higher preferences only, (3) Slide — accept the seat but stay in counselling for better options in the SAME institute. Most students choose 'Float' to keep their options open while securing a seat.

Required documents: (1) JEE Main/Advanced scorecard, (2) Class 10 marksheet and certificate, (3) Class 12 marksheet, (4) Category certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS — must be recent), (5) Photo ID (Aadhaar/passport), (6) Passport-size photographs (6–8 copies), (7) Character certificate from school, (8) Medical fitness certificate, (9) Domicile certificate (for state quota). All documents need originals AND photocopies.

Seat acceptance fee varies by category: General/OBC — ₹35,000 (approximately), SC/ST/PwD — ₹15,000–₹20,000. This fee is paid online after seat allotment to confirm your acceptance. It is adjustable against the first semester fee. If you do not pay within the deadline (usually 2–3 days), your seat is cancelled and offered to the next candidate.

If no seat is allotted after all JoSAA rounds: (1) Wait for CSAB special rounds (for NITs/IIITs), (2) Apply through state-level counselling (MHT-CET, KCET, WBJEE, etc.), (3) Apply to private universities (BITS, VIT, SRM, Manipal — they have separate admission), (4) Consider taking a drop year and re-attempting JEE. Many students who don't get seats in JoSAA find good options through state counselling.
