How to Choose the Right College

  1. Branch and college together. A branch you want at a strong NIT can beat a branch you don't want at a newer IIT. If you plan to switch fields or go for higher studies, the institute's brand and research matter more.
  2. Check placement data, not promises. Look for the median salary (averages are inflated by a few high packages) and the number of students placed, not just those who sat for placements. Most institutes report these in their NIRF data.
  3. Location matters. Colleges near tech and industry hubs usually offer easier access to internships.
  4. Fees vs outcomes. Government institutes charge far lower tuition than most private colleges. For a private college, weigh the total fees against its official placement numbers.
  5. Alumni network. Older institutions (IITs, NITs, BITS) have stronger alumni networks that help with jobs, startups and mentorship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the number 1 engineering college in India?

IIT Madras is ranked No. 1 in the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking, followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. NIT Tiruchirappalli (9th) is the highest-ranked NIT, and BITS Pilani (11th) the highest-ranked private institute. NIRF's 2026 ranking had not been published when this page was last updated.

It depends on the college, branch, category and quota. For reference: IIT Bombay CSE closed at AIR 67 and IIT Delhi CSE at 128 in JoSAA 2026 (JEE Advanced ranks, reported by Careers360); CSE at the top five NITs closed between JEE Main AIR 1,449 and 5,222 for Other-State Open candidates in JoSAA 2025; and BITS Pilani CSE needed 308 out of 390 in BITSAT for 2026-27. Check official closing ranks on josaa.nic.in and each college's site.

It depends on the college. Some private institutes rank highly in NIRF and have strong placements; many lower-ranked colleges charge high fees for weak outcomes. Before paying, compare the college's official placement data (median salary and the number placed, which most publish in their NIRF submissions) with its total fees.

It varies enormously by college, branch and year, so be wary of any single figure. The most reliable numbers are each institute's own NIRF data, which reports the number of graduates placed and their median salary for recent batches. Compare medians, not highest packages.

IITs generally lead on research, brand and placements. But a top NIT (Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal) can be a better choice than a newer IIT in a branch you don't want. Decide on the branch + college combination and your career goal, and check each institute's placement data.

There is no route into an IIT's B.Tech without JEE Advanced. Other IIT routes are JAM for M.Sc, GATE for M.Tech, CAT for IIT MBA programmes, and direct PhD admissions. There is no management quota and no donation seat — admission is on merit only.
