1. What Mathematical Modelling Means
- A mathematical model is a mathematical description of a real-life situation.
- Mathematical modelling is the process of creating a mathematical model, solving it and using it to understand the real-life problem.
- Modelling helps to estimate, predict, forecast, and simulate.
2
2. Stages in Mathematical Modelling
- There are five steps in mathematical modelling: understanding the problem, mathematical description and formulation, solving the mathematical problem, interpreting the solution, and validating the mod
- Step 1: Understand the real problem and make suitable assumptions.
- Step 2: Translate the situation into mathematics using variables, equations, tables, graphs, or probabilities.
3
3. Example of Fish Population Estimation
- In the fish population example, 20 fishes are marked and released first.
- A second sample of 50 fishes is taken later, and 5 are found marked.
- The fraction of marked fishes in the second sample is 5/50 = 1/10.
4
4. Rolling of a Pair of Dice
- When two fair dice are rolled, there are 36 equally likely pairs.
- The possible sums are 2 to 12.
- The probability of each sum follows a fixed pattern.
