Basic Concepts - Sequences and Series

  • A sequence is an ordered arrangement of numbers following a specific rule
  • A finite sequence has countable terms, infinite sequence has uncountable terms
  • Terms are denoted as a₁, a₂, a₃, ..., aₙ where aₙ is the general term
2

Arithmetic Progression (AP)

  • Each term (except first) is obtained by adding a constant to the previous term
  • Common difference d = aₙ₊₁ - aₙ (constant for all n)
  • Can have positive, negative, or zero common difference
3

Arithmetic Mean (AM)

  • AM of two numbers a and b is (a+b)/2
  • Single AM between a and b makes a, AM, b an AP
  • Can insert multiple AMs between two numbers
4

Geometric Progression (GP)

  • Each term (except first) is obtained by multiplying previous term by a constant
  • Common ratio r = aₙ₊₁/aₙ (constant for all n, r ≠ 0)
  • Three numbers a, b, c are in GP if b² = ac
