1. Knowing the World Through Senses

  • Knowledge of the world begins with sense organs.
  • Human beings have seven sense organs in total: eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, kinesthetic system, and vestibular system.

2. Attention: Selection and Focus

  • Attention is the process through which certain stimuli are selected from a group of others.
  • Attention includes alertness, concentration, and search.
  • Attention has a focus and a fringe.

3. Theories of Selective Attention

  • Broadbent developed filter theory in 1956.
  • Filter theory says many stimuli enter the sensory system and create a bottleneck.
  • Only one stimulus passes through the selective filter for higher processing.

4. Span of Attention and ADHD

  • Span of attention is the number of items one can attend to at brief exposure.
  • Miller reported that span of attention varies within seven plus or minus two.
  • This is popularly known as the magic number.
