The Midnight Visitor — Important Questions

Fat, Sloppy, American accent

The story clearly describes Ausable as 'fat. Very fat' and 'sloppy fat man'. He also had an American accent that he brought from Boston twenty years ago and never lost completely, even though he could speak French and German.

False

Max actually entered using a passkey, not through a balcony. When Ausable mentioned the balcony, Max said 'No, a passkey. I did not know about the balcony. It might have saved me some trouble had I known.' Max only learned about the supposed balcony from Ausable's story.

Detailed description of room layout, Mention of previous incident, Reference to management promises, His confident tone

Ausable makes his balcony story believable by providing specific details: explaining how the room was part of a larger unit, mentioning that someone got in last month through the balcony, complaining about management's broken promise to block it off, and speaking with genuine irritation and confidence.

Henry the waiter

When the door finally opens, it's revealed to be Henry, a waiter bringing drinks that Ausable had ordered. Ausable confirms this by saying 'There were no police. Only Henry, whom I was expecting.' This was part of Ausable's clever plan.
