A Triumph of Surgery

Mrs. Pumphrey gave Tricki malt, cod-liver oil, and Horlicks at night as supplements. She also couldn't resist giving him cream cakes and chocolates, which contributed to his obesity. All these were given thinking they would help his health, but they actually made him worse.

She almost swooned and was very upset

Mrs. Pumphrey almost swooned (nearly fainted) when hospitalization was suggested. She was extremely distressed and believed that Tricki would pine and die if he didn't see her every day, showing her over-attachment to the dog.

No food for two days, then natural diet and exercise with other dogs

Mr. Herriot gave Tricki no medicinal treatment. For two days, he gave him no food but plenty of water. Then Tricki joined the other dogs, got natural exercise, competed for food at mealtimes, and engaged in physical activities. This simple, natural approach cured him completely.

Fresh eggs, Bottles of wine, Brandy

Mrs. Pumphrey sent fresh eggs (two dozen at a time) to build up Tricki's strength, then bottles of wine to enrich his blood, and finally brandy to put a final edge on his constitution. These gifts were actually enjoyed by Mr. Herriot and his partners rather than given to Tricki.
