Topics in Understanding Quadrilateral

1

Polygons – Basic Concepts

  • A polygon is a simple closed curve made up of only line segments.
  • A convex polygon has all its diagonals lying completely inside it. No part of any diagonal goes outside.
  • A concave polygon has at least one diagonal that lies outside the figure.
2

Sum of Exterior Angles of a Polygon

  • The sum of all exterior angles of ANY polygon (convex) = 360°. This is true regardless of the number of sides.
  • This property is explained by imagining walking along the boundary of a polygon. After one complete trip, you turn exactly 360°.
  • For a regular polygon: Each exterior angle = 360° ÷ number of sides.
3

Types of Quadrilaterals

  • A quadrilateral is a polygon with exactly 4 sides.
  • The sum of all interior angles of a quadrilateral = 360°.
  • TRAPEZIUM: A quadrilateral with exactly ONE pair of parallel sides. The parallel sides are called 'bases'. If the non-parallel sides are equal, it is called an ISOSCELES TRAPEZIUM.
4

Properties of a Parallelogram

  • PROPERTY 1 (Opposite Sides): The opposite sides of a parallelogram are equal in length. (AB = DC and AD = BC)
  • PROPERTY 2 (Opposite Angles): The opposite angles of a parallelogram are equal in measure. (∠A = ∠C and ∠B = ∠D)
  • PROPERTY 3 (Adjacent Angles): The adjacent angles (co-interior angles) in a parallelogram are supplementary, i.e., they add up to 180°. (∠A + ∠B = 180°, ∠B + ∠C = 180°, etc.)
