What to Focus On

  • Degree of polynomial = highest power of x with non-zero coefficient
  • Linear: degree 1 | Quadratic: degree 2 | Cubic: degree 3
  • Expressions with negative or fractional powers of x are NOT polynomials

  • Zeroes of p(x) = x-coordinates where graph of y = p(x) meets the x-axis
  • Linear polynomial: graph is straight line, exactly 1 zero
  • Quadratic polynomial: graph is parabola, 0, 1, or 2 zeroes possible

  • For ax² + bx + c with zeroes α and β: α + β = –b/a and αβ = c/a
  • Sum of zeroes = –(coefficient of x) ÷ (coefficient of x²)
  • Product of zeroes = constant term ÷ coefficient of x²

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The sum of zeroes of ax² + bx + c is b/a (positive), not -b/a (negative).

A quadratic polynomial always has two zeroes — it cannot have zero zeroes.

The zero of a polynomial and the value zero (0) are the same thing — p(x) = 0 means the polynomial itself is zero.

Linear, Quadratic, Cubic — Name vs Degree

What is NOT a polynomial (e.g., 1/x, √x)
