What to Focus On

  • Anticlockwise rotation gives a POSITIVE angle; clockwise gives a NEGATIVE angle.
  • Formula: l = rθ, where l = arc length, r = radius, θ = angle in radians.
  • π radians = 180° — this is the single most important conversion to memorise.

  • cos x and sin x are defined as the x- and y-coordinates of a point on the unit circle.
  • The fundamental identity: cos²x + sin²x = 1. All other identities are derived from this.
  • 1 + tan²x = sec²x and 1 + cot²x = cosec²x come from dividing the fundamental identity.

  • ASTC Rule (All Students Take Calculus): Q1=All, Q2=Sin, Q3=Tan, Q4=Cos are positive.
  • Range of sin and cos is [–1, 1]. Range of sec and cosec is (–∞, –1] ∪ [1, +∞).
  • sin(–x) = –sin x (odd); cos(–x) = cos x (even) — extremely useful in simplifications.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

sin(A + B) = sin A + sin B (trigonometric functions distribute over addition)

tan(x) is defined for all real numbers, just like sin(x) and cos(x)

In all quadrants, sin, cos, and tan are positive

Memory Tips

ASTC Rule — Signs of trig functions in four quadrants

Radian measure formula: θ = l/r

π radian = 180°

sin²x + cos²x = 1 (Pythagorean Identity)
