Meaning and Basic Idea

E_d = Percentage change in demand for the good / Percentage change in price of the good

E_d = ΔQ/Q × P/ΔP

Methods of Measuring Price Elasticity

Ed = (ΔQ/Q × 100) / (ΔP/P × 100)

Ed = ΔQ/ΔP × P/Q

TE = P × Q

Ed = Lower part of the demand curve / Upper part of the demand curve

Ed = Lower part of the tangent line / Upper part of the tangent line

Degrees or Kinds of Price Elasticity

Ed = 0

Ed < 1

Ed = 1

Ed > 1

Ed = infinity

Total Expenditure Method

TE = P × Q

If price and total expenditure are inversely related, demand is elastic

If price and total expenditure are directly related, demand is inelastic

If total expenditure remains unchanged with price change, demand is unit elastic
