The father-thing sagged limply in the chair as if its power was turned off

Step 1: Charles and Peretti peep through the living room window from outside. Step 2: As long as Mrs. Walton is in the room, the father-thing behaves normally — reading the newspaper, drinking beer. Step 3: The moment she leaves, the father-thing goes completely limp — its mouth falls open, its eyes become vacant, and its head droops forward like a rag doll. Step 4: Peretti correctly deduces that it is being controlled from outside, explaining its sudden deactivation. Step 5: This is a key moment revealing the alien nature of the creature.

Being excellent at finding things

Step 1: The boys spread out to search the area near the garage, as that is where Charles's father was when he was replaced. Step 2: Bobby Daniels works with incredible speed, checking flowers, rocks, and plants. Step 3: Daniels raises a concrete stone and finds the alien bug underneath it in the moist, rotting soil near the flower bed by the garage. Step 4: The trash barrel holds the remains of the father, not the bug. The bamboo thicket holds the larvae/cocoons. Step 5: Finding the bug under the stone is the breakthrough the boys needed.
