The Trumpet of the Swans

She thought Sam might be lost and was just watching them.

Four eggs

Step 1: The text tells us about the eggs directly. Step 2: After the female swan left the nest, it says 'There, lying safely on the soft feathers at the bottom of the nest, were four eggs.' Step 3: She had laid a fourth egg just before Sam's first visit. Step 4: Two, three, and five are all incorrect numbers.

A Red Fox

Step 1: The cob knew there was danger in the woods. Step 2: The text says 'He knew that a fox prowled somewhere in the woods; he had heard him barking on some nights.' Step 3: Later, the fox tried to attack the female swan. Step 4: The story specifically calls it the 'Red Fox.' Wolves, leopards, and crocodiles are not mentioned.

He threw a stick that hit the fox on the nose.

Step 1: Just as the fox was about to spring on the swan, Sam acted quickly. Step 2: The text says 'a stick came hurtling through the air, surprising everybody.' Step 3: It says the stick 'struck the fox on the nose' and 'he yelped in pain as he turned around to run away.' Step 4: Sam threw a stick, not a stone. He did not shout or chase the fox.
