What to Focus On

  • Ordered pair (a, b): order of elements is strictly important; (a, b) ≠ (b, a) unless a = b
  • A × B = {(a, b) : a ∈ A, b ∈ B} — all possible ordered pairs
  • n(A × B) = n(A) × n(B) — multiply the number of elements

  • R is a relation from A to B means R ⊆ A × B
  • Domain = set of all first elements; Range = set of all second elements
  • Codomain = entire set B; Range ⊆ Codomain always

  • Function: every element of domain A has exactly ONE image in B
  • Many-to-one is allowed in a function; one-to-many is NOT allowed
  • Every function is a relation but not every relation is a function

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Every relation from set A to set B is a function

A × B and B × A are always the same set

The range of a function is always equal to its codomain

Memory Tips

Ordered Pair – order matters, (a,b) ≠ (b,a)

Cartesian Product A×B = all ordered pairs from A and B

n(A×B) = n(A) × n(B)

A×B ≠ B×A (Cartesian product is not commutative)
