Key Topics to Revise
1. Problem Solving Basics
- Problem solving is the process of identifying a problem, developing an algorithm for it, and finally implementing the algorithm to develop a computer program.
- Computers can do tasks faster and more accurately, but they need precise step-by-step instructions.
- The correctness of output depends on the correctness of input. This is the GIGO concept.
2. Algorithm
- An algorithm is a finite sequence of exact steps that solves a problem or performs a task.
- An algorithm has a definite beginning, a definite end, and a finite number of steps.
- The purpose of using an algorithm is to increase reliability, accuracy, and efficiency of obtaining solutions.
3. Representation of Algorithms
- There are two common methods of representing an algorithm: flowchart and pseudocode.
- Both methods show the logic of the solution and exclude implementational details.
- Flowcharts use standard symbols connected by arrows.
4. Flowchart Symbols and Basic Examples
- Standard flowchart symbols include Start/End, Process, Decision, Input/Output, and Arrow.
- Start/End is also called the Terminator symbol.
