- A natural hazard is a natural condition or element that can cause harm, such as steep slopes, ocean currents, or extreme desert climate.
- A disaster is an undesirable occurrence that causes or threatens serious disruption of life and property and usually strikes suddenly.
- Hazards and disasters are related but not the same. A hazard has potential for harm; a disaster is the actual harmful event.
2. Disaster Reduction and Management Framework
- The issue of global repercussions of natural disasters was raised at the UN General Assembly in 1989 and formalised at Yokohama in May 1994.
- The World Conference on Natural Disaster Reduction was held in Yokohama from May 23rd to 27th, 1994.
- The conference declared 1990-2000 as the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.
3. Earthquakes in India
- Earthquakes are among the most unpredictable and destructive natural disasters.
- Tectonic earthquakes are the most devastating because they affect a large area.
- The Indian plate moves at 1 cm per year towards the north and northeast and is obstructed by the Eurasian plate.
4. Tsunamis
- Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions that suddenly move the sea floor and displace ocean water.
- Tsunami waves are also called harbour waves or seismic sea waves.
- In deep ocean water, tsunami impact is low because wave-height is limited.
