- Formal university teaching of sociology in India began in 1919 at the University of Bombay.

2. L.K. Ananthakrishna Iyer and Sarat Chandra Roy
- L.K. Ananthakrishna Iyer was a pioneer of social anthropology in India and a self-taught anthropologist.
- He began as a clerk, then became a school and college teacher in Cochin.
- In 1902, he was asked by the Dewan of Cochin to assist with an ethnographic survey.
3. G.S. Ghurye: Institutional Builder and Caste Studies
- G.S. Ghurye was born on 12 December 1893 in Malvan in the Konkan region.
- He is considered the founder of institutionalised sociology in India.
- He headed the Bombay University sociology department for 35 years.
4. Ghurye on Tribes, Caste, and Race
- Herbert Risley argued that caste originated in race on the basis of physical measurements.
- Ghurye believed Risley's Aryan and non-Aryan thesis was broadly true only for northern India.
- He argued that in much of India, racial mixing had occurred for a long time.
