Topics in Freedom (G.B Shaw)
1. Shaw's Idea of Freedom
- A perfectly free person is imagined as someone who can do what he likes, when he likes, where he likes, or do nothing at all.
- Such complete freedom does not exist because human beings are bound by sleep, food, dress, movement, and other necessities.
- For half the day, people are slaves to necessities they cannot avoid.
2. Natural Slavery and Human Slavery
- Nature forces human beings to meet basic needs, but nature is kind because eating, drinking, and sleeping are pleasant.
- Human-made slavery is hateful to body and spirit.
- Shaw compares human exploitation to stealing honey from bees or using a horse as a slave.
3. Government, Elections, and the Illusion of Freedom
- The object of all honest governments should be to stop people from being imposed upon.
- Most actual governments do the opposite and call slavery freedom.
- Governments regulate slavery by limiting the greed of masters, but they do not remove exploitation.
4. Class War, Trade Unions, and Revolution
- Human slavery creates continual civil war, called the class war, between slaves and masters.
- Trade Unions stand on one side and Employers' Federations on the other.
- The strike is described as the old Oriental device of starving on your enemy's doorstep until he does you justice.
