Formulas

1. Core idea and notation

A = [a_ij]_(m×n), 1 ≤ i ≤ m, 1 ≤ j ≤ n, i, j ∈ N

Number of elements in an m×n matrix = mn

2. Types of matrices

Column matrix: m×1

Row matrix: 1×n

Square matrix: m = n

Diagonal matrix: b_ij = 0 when i ≠ j

Scalar matrix: b_ij = 0 when i ≠ j, b_ij = k when i = j

3. Equality of matrices

Two matrices A and B are equal only if they have the same order and a_ij = b_ij for all i, j

4. Addition, subtraction and scalar multiplication

A + B = [a_ij + b_ij]_(m×n)

D = A - B = A + (-1)B, d_ij = a_ij - b_ij

kA = k[a_ij]_(m×n) = [k(a_ij)]_(m×n)
