1. Core Idea and Discovery
- Electricity and magnetism are closely related.
- Around 1830, Faraday and Henry showed that electric currents are induced in closed coils when magnetic fields change.
- Relative motion between a magnet and a coil, or between two coils, can produce induced current.
2. Experiments of Faraday and Henry
- In Experiment 6.1, a bar magnet moved towards or away from coil C1 connected to galvanometer G causes deflection.
- The direction of deflection reverses when the magnet is withdrawn.
- Reversing the magnet pole also reverses the direction of deflection.
3. Magnetic Flux
- Magnetic flux is a scalar quantity.
- For a uniform magnetic field across a plane surface, flux depends on field strength, area, and angle.
- For curved or nonuniform surfaces, flux is found by summing over small area elements.
4. Faraday's Law of Induction
- The magnitude of induced emf equals the time rate of change of magnetic flux through the circuit.
- The negative sign in Faraday's law shows the direction of induced emf and current.
- For a coil with N turns, the induced emf increases with N.
