A pirate summons or death sentence

Billy himself explains to Jim that 'the black spot was a pirate summons' - it's essentially a formal notice from other pirates that someone is marked for death or serious punishment. In pirate culture, receiving the black spot meant you were condemned by your fellow pirates. The text shows that Billy was terrified of receiving it because he knew what it meant. This is a real historical pirate tradition that Stevenson incorporated into his story to add authenticity to the pirate culture depicted.

The Hispaniola

The text clearly states that 'he bought a fine schooner called The Hispaniola' when describing Squire Trelawney's preparations for the voyage. The Hispaniola becomes central to the story as it's the vessel that takes them to Treasure Island and later becomes a prize to be fought over between the loyal crew and the mutinous pirates. The name 'Hispaniola' refers to the Caribbean island where Haiti and the Dominican Republic are located, which fits the Caribbean pirate setting of the story.

Barbecue

The story mentions that Long John Silver was 'nicknamed Barbecue' because of his role as the ship's cook. This nickname emphasizes his seemingly harmless domestic role, which makes his later revelation as the story's main antagonist more surprising. The nickname 'Barbecue' also suggests someone friendly and welcoming, which fits with Silver's initial charming personality that fools Jim and the others. It's ironic that someone with such a pleasant nickname turns out to be the leader of the mutiny.

Cap'n Flint

The text states that Long John Silver had 'his parrot, Cap'n Flint, on his shoulder, squawking: "Pieces of eight … Pieces of eight!"' The parrot is named after the famous dead pirate captain whose treasure they're seeking. This creates an ironic connection between Silver and the legendary captain. The parrot's constant squawking of 'Pieces of eight' (Spanish coins) reinforces the treasure theme and adds to the pirate atmosphere while also serving as a reminder of Silver's true pirate nature.
