The Indian national flag must be made in the ratio of 3:2, meaning the length should be 3 units and width should be 2 units. For example, if the width is 2 feet, the length should be 3 feet. This specific proportion ensures the flag maintains its proper appearance and dignity. Other ratios like 2:1, 4:3, or 5:3 would make the flag look different from its official design and are therefore incorrect.

Khadi

The national flag must be made from Khadi, which is hand-spun and hand-woven cloth made from raw cotton. Khadi represents self-reliance and the independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. While silk, regular cotton, or polyester might be easier to obtain, only Khadi is officially prescribed for making the national flag. This maintains the connection to our freedom struggle and supports traditional Indian craftsmanship.

From sunrise to sunset

During national festivals, the flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset. This timing shows respect for the flag and follows proper protocol. Hoisting only in the morning or evening would be incomplete, and keeping it up throughout the night is not the standard practice for regular occasions. The sunrise to sunset timing ensures the flag is visible during daylight hours when people can see and honor it properly.

Should not be displayed

A torn, dirty, or faded flag should never be displayed as it shows disrespect to our national symbol. Such flags lose their dignity and proper appearance. Continuing to use damaged flags, using them for decoration, or keeping them as memories are all inappropriate. Instead, damaged flags should be disposed of respectfully, and a new, proper flag should be used for display to maintain the honor of our national symbol.
