What to Focus On

  • Testes are located in the scrotum at 2–2.5°C below body temperature to facilitate spermatogenesis.
  • Each testis has ~250 testicular lobules, each containing 1–3 seminiferous tubules.
  • Spermatogonia undergo meiosis to form sperms; Sertoli cells nourish developing germ cells.

  • Ovaries are the primary female sex organs producing ova and ovarian hormones (estrogens and progesterone).
  • Fallopian tube regions: Infundibulum (with fimbriae) → Ampulla (site of fertilisation) → Isthmus (joins uterus).
  • Fimbriae collect the ovum released during ovulation.

  • Spermatogenesis: Spermatogonia (mitosis) → Primary Spermatocytes (meiosis I) → Secondary Spermatocytes (meiosis II) → Spermatids (spermiogenesis) → Spermatozoa.
  • Spermiogenesis = transformation of spermatids into spermatozoa; Spermiation = release of sperms from Sertoli cells.
  • LH stimulates Leydig cells to produce androgens; FSH acts on Sertoli cells to support spermiogenesis.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Spermatogenesis produces 4 functional sperms from one primary spermatocyte, just like oogenesis produces 4 cells too

The sex of the baby is determined by the mother because it is the mother's body that carries the baby

Ovulation releases a mature ovum (secondary oocyte has already completed meiosis II)

Memory Tips

Male Reproductive System — components and order

Scrotum keeps testes 2–2.5°C cooler than body for spermatogenesis

Sertoli cells provide nutrition; Leydig cells secrete androgens

Sperm structure: head, neck, middle piece, tail
