What to Focus On

  • Searching locates a particular element in a collection.
  • The result tells whether the key is present.
  • If present, the position of the key can also be found.
  • Each element is compared one by one with the key.
  • It is also called sequential search or serial search.
  • It is suitable for small and unordered lists.
  • Binary search works only on a sorted list.
  • The key is compared with the middle element.
  • The search area is halved after each unsuccessful step.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Binary search can be used on any list, even if the list is unsorted.

In binary search, every step is just a comparison, so the term iteration is not important.

For binary search with an even number of elements, the middle is the lower of the two central elements.
