His disapproval of changing times

The phrase 'somehow improper' is Yashodhara Babu's recurring expression to show his disapproval of modern changes - his son's wide trousers and high-heeled shoes, his daughter's jeans and sleeveless tops, his wife's use of lipstick and hair dye. This phrase represents his inability to directly confront change while expressing his discomfort with it, showing his traditional mindset struggling with modernity.

He faces conflicts with his modern family

Yashodhara Babu deliberately delays returning home because he faces constant disagreements with his wife and children over their modern lifestyle choices. His family has embraced contemporary values while he clings to traditional ways. These conflicts make him uncomfortable at home, so he spends time at the temple and market to avoid early confrontations with his modernized family members.

His traditional values and simple lifestyle

The red gamchha represents Yashodhara Babu's adherence to traditional, simple living inherited from Kishanda. When he wears it during evening prayers and even enters the drawing room in it, his family objects strongly. The gamchha symbolizes the cultural divide - while his family embraces modern western attire, he clings to traditional Indian clothing, showing the clash between old and new values.

Visiting temples and doing evening prayers

Yashodhara Babu's daily visits to Birla Temple and his regular evening prayers (sandhya) are practices his family strongly disapproves of. They tell him he's not a 'bua' (elderly woman) to go to temples daily and observe so many religious rituals. His family sees these as outdated practices that don't suit a modern man, while for him, these represent spiritual fulfillment and connection to traditional values.
