Definition and Basic Concepts of Limits
- A limit describes the value that a function approaches as the input approaches a certain value
- We write lim(x→a) f(x) = L, meaning f(x) approaches L as x approaches a
- The function need not be defined at x = a for the limit to exist
Algebra of Limits
- Limits follow algebraic properties similar to regular arithmetic
- Sum rule: lim[f(x) + g(x)] = lim f(x) + lim g(x)
- Product rule: lim[f(x) × g(x)] = lim f(x) × lim g(x)
Method of Factorization
- Used when direct substitution gives 0/0 form
- Factor numerator and denominator to find common factors
- Cancel common factors (valid since x ≠ a in limit process)
Method of Rationalization
- Used when expressions involve square roots or radicals
- Multiply by conjugate to eliminate radicals from numerator or denominator
- Conjugate of (a + b) is (a - b) and vice versa
