What to Focus On

  • A set is a WELL-DEFINED collection of objects — membership must be unambiguous.
  • Roster form: List all elements inside { }, no repetition, order doesn't matter.
  • Set-builder form: Describe the common property: A = { x : property }.

  • Empty set Φ = { } has NO elements. It is finite with n(Φ) = 0.
  • {0} is NOT empty — it has one element, zero.
  • Finite set: n(S) is a whole number. Infinite set: elements go on without end.

  • A ⊆ B: Every element of A is in B. A ⊂ B: A ⊆ B and A ≠ B (proper subset).
  • Φ is a subset of every set. Every set is a subset of itself.
  • To prove A = B: show A ⊆ B AND B ⊆ A.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The empty set {∅} and the empty set ∅ (or φ) are the same thing.

If A ⊂ B, then A is always smaller than B in terms of number of elements.

The number of subsets of a set with n elements is n or 2n (instead of 2^n).
