  • A galvanic cell converts chemical energy → electrical energy (spontaneous redox).
  • An electrolytic cell converts electrical energy → chemical energy (non-spontaneous redox).
  • In galvanic cells: Anode = oxidation (negative), Cathode = reduction (positive).

  • Standard Electrode Potential (E°) is measured against SHE (assigned E° = 0 V).
  • IUPAC convention: E° values are always written as reduction potentials.
  • Higher (more positive) E° → greater tendency to get reduced → stronger oxidising agent.

  • Nernst equation: E_cell = E°_cell − (RT/nF)lnQ or at 298K: E_cell = E°_cell − (0.059/n)logQ
  • At equilibrium, E_cell = 0, so E°_cell = (0.059/n) × log K at 298 K.
  • ΔrG = −nFE_cell and ΔrG° = −nFE°_cell

Common Mistakes to Avoid

In a galvanic cell, the anode is positive and the cathode is negative — just like in electrolytic cells.

The EMF of a cell is fixed and does not change with concentration of ions in solution.

A higher standard electrode potential always means the element is a better reducing agent.
