  • Windows uses a Graphical User Interface, so commands appear as icons on the monitor.
  • There is no need to remember all commands by heart in a GUI system.

2. Desktop Elements: Start Menu and Task Bar

  • The Start Menu appears when the Start button is clicked.
  • The Start Menu gives access to All Programs, My Documents, My Recent Documents, My Picture, My Music, Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, Help and Support, Search, Run, Log Off, and Turn Off Computer.
  • All Programs shows the list of installed programs.

3. Opening, Quitting, and Getting Help

  • A program can be started by clicking Start, then All Programs, then the desired folder, and then the program.
  • To quit a program, use the close button in the upper-right corner or select File and then Close.
  • Help and Support is available from the Start menu.

  • Search companion helps locate files and folders in local storage such as Hard Disk and CD, and also in a network drive.
  • The Indexing Service maintains an index of all files on the computer.
