What is an Arithmetic Progression?
- An Arithmetic Progression (AP) is a list of numbers in which each term is obtained by adding a FIXED number to the preceding term (except the first term).
- This fixed number is called the Common Difference (d). It can be positive, negative, or zero.
- To check if a list is an AP: subtract each term from the next term — if the difference is always the same, it is an AP.
The nth Term (General Term) of an AP
- The nth term formula lets us find ANY term of an AP without listing all previous terms.
- The nth term is also called the GENERAL TERM and is denoted by aₙ.
- If an AP has m terms, the last term is aₘ, sometimes written as 'l'.
Sum of First n Terms of an AP
- The sum of first n terms is denoted by Sₙ.
- There are TWO versions of the sum formula — use the right one based on what information is given.
- Formula 1: Use when first term (a) and common difference (d) are known.
Problem-Solving Strategy for Different AP Problem Types
- TYPE 1 — Check if AP: Calculate consecutive differences. If all equal, it is AP. State a and d.
- TYPE 2 — Find nth term: Identify a, d, n. Apply aₙ = a + (n-1)d.
- TYPE 3 — Find which term: Set aₙ = given value. Solve for n. Check n is a positive integer.
