Punjab Board Class 9 Mathematics — Formula Sheet

Punjab Board Class 9 Mathematics formula sheet, chapter by chapter — 20 formulas across 4 chapters. Follows the PSEB syllabus.

How to Use the Formula Sheet

  1. Write, don't just read — writing each formula out helps it stick.
  2. Understand the derivation — you can rebuild a formula you half-remember.
  3. Group related formulas — link the ones that build on each other.
  4. Test yourself — cover the sheet and write the formulas from memory.

Number System

10 entries
Irrational numbers were first discovered by the Pythagoreans around 400 BC. Hippacus of Croton discovered that √2 is irrational.
Examples of irrational numbers: √2, √3, √5, √7, √15, π, 0.10110111011110...
√4 = 2 (rational), √9 = 3 (rational) — perfect square roots are rational, non-perfect square roots are irrational.
TERMINATING DECIMAL: The decimal expansion ends (remainder becomes 0). Example: 7/8 = 0.875
NON-TERMINATING RECURRING (REPEATING): The decimal goes on forever but a block of digits repeats. Example: 1/7 = 0.142857142857... = 0.̄1̄4̄2̄8̄5̄7̄

Polynomials

A ZERO of polynomial p(x) is a number 'c' such that p(c) = 0.
Finding a zero means solving the equation p(x) = 0.
FACTOR THEOREM: (x – a) is a factor of p(x) if and only if p(a) = 0.
The Factor Theorem is a special case of the Remainder Theorem (when remainder = 0, the divisor is a factor).
SPLITTING THE MIDDLE TERM: For ax^2 + bx + c, find two numbers p and q such that p + q = b and p × q = a × c. Rewrite bx as px + qx and factorise by grouping.

Quadrant I: Both x and y are positive → (+, +). Example: (3, 5)
Quadrant II: x is negative, y is positive → (−, +). Example: (−4, 2)
