Topics in Circles

1

Basic Terms and Definitions

  • A circle is the collection of all points in a plane that are at a fixed distance (radius) from a fixed point (center)
  • The complete length of a circle is called its circumference
  • A circle divides the plane into three parts: interior, exterior, and the circle itself
2

Angle Subtended by Chords and Equal Chords Theorem

  • Equal chords subtend equal angles at the center
  • If angles subtended by chords at center are equal, then chords are equal
  • Longer chords subtend larger angles at the center
3

Perpendicular from Center to Chord

  • Perpendicular from center to a chord bisects the chord
  • Line from center that bisects a chord is perpendicular to that chord
  • Equal chords are equidistant from the center
4

Angles Subtended by Arcs - Central and Inscribed Angles

  • Angle subtended by arc at center = 2 × angle subtended by same arc at any point on circle
  • Equal arcs subtend equal angles at the center
  • Angle in semicircle is always 90°
