Topics in Acoustics

1

Sound Waves – Nature and Types

  • Sound is produced by the vibration of bodies and travels in the form of longitudinal waves.
  • Sound requires a material medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to propagate — it CANNOT travel in vacuum.
  • In longitudinal waves, particles vibrate along the direction of wave propagation, forming compressions (high pressure) and rarefactions (low pressure).
2

Factors Affecting Velocity of Sound

  • In gases, three main factors affect the speed of sound: density, temperature, and humidity.
  • Effect of density: Speed is inversely proportional to the square root of density — v ∝ 1/√d. Denser gas = slower sound.
  • Effect of temperature: Speed is directly proportional to the square root of absolute temperature — v ∝ √T. Hotter gas = faster sound.
3

Reflection of Sound

  • When sound waves strike the surface of another medium, they bounce back — this is called reflection of sound.
  • The incident wave is the one that strikes the surface; the reflected wave is the one that bounces back.
  • Sound obeys the same two laws of reflection as light.
4

Echo – Conditions, Applications and Speed Measurement

  • An echo is the sound heard after reflection of the original sound from a rigid surface (wall, mountain, ceiling, etc.).
  • The persistence of human hearing is 0.1 second — the ear cannot distinguish two sounds if they arrive within 0.1 s of each other.
  • For an echo to be heard, the time gap between original sound and echo must be at least 0.1 s.
