Topics in Complex Numbers

1

1. Introduction to Complex Numbers and Powers of i

  • The imaginary unit i is defined by i² = -1
  • Powers of i follow a cyclic pattern: i¹ = i, i² = -1, i³ = -i, i⁴ = 1
  • For any integer n, iⁿ depends only on the remainder when n is divided by 4
2

2. Rectangular Form and Basic Operations

  • Rectangular form: z = x + iy where x = Re(z), y = Im(z)
  • Two complex numbers are equal iff their real and imaginary parts are separately equal
  • Scalar multiplication: kz = (kx) + (ky)i
3

3. Algebraic Properties and Conjugates

  • Complex numbers obey closure, commutative, associative, distributive properties
  • Additive identity: 0 = 0 + 0i
  • Multiplicative identity: 1 = 1 + 0i
4

4. Modulus (Absolute Value) of Complex Numbers

  • Modulus of z = x + iy is |z| = √(x² + y²)
  • Geometrically, |z| is the distance from origin to point (x, y)
  • Triangle inequality: |z₁ + z₂| ≤ |z₁| + |z₂|
