What to Focus On
- Nitrogen in amines is sp³ hybridised with a pyramidal geometry.
- The fourth sp³ orbital contains a lone pair of electrons — responsible for basic and nucleophilic behaviour.
- Bond angle in amines is less than 109.5° due to lone pair–bond pair repulsion.
- Primary amine (1°): R–NH₂ — one alkyl/aryl group on N.
- Secondary amine (2°): R₂NH — two alkyl/aryl groups on N.
- Tertiary amine (3°): R₃N — three alkyl/aryl groups on N.
- IUPAC: Primary amines are named as alkanamines — replace 'e' of alkane with 'amine'.
- For secondary/tertiary amines, use N– locant: e.g., N-methylethanamine.
- Multiple –NH₂ groups: use diamine, triamine with position numbers; retain 'e' of hydrocarbon — e.g., ethane-1,2-diamine.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The basicity of amines always increases as more alkyl groups are added — so tertiary amine is always the strongest base among the three types
Aniline is a stronger base than ammonia because the benzene ring donates electrons to nitrogen through resonance
In Gabriel phthalimide synthesis, aromatic primary amines like aniline can also be prepared by using aryl halides instead of alkyl halides
