The Treaty of Versailles imposed harsh terms on Germany: it lost territories, had to pay huge reparations (£6 billion), and was demilitarised. These harsh conditions created resentment among Germans.

Hitler joined a small group called the German Workers' Party in 1919. He later took over the organisation and renamed it the National Socialist German Workers' Party, which became known as the Nazi Party.

Nordic German Aryans

According to Nazi racial ideology, blond, blue-eyed Nordic German Aryans were considered the superior race and placed at the top of the racial hierarchy, while Jews were considered the lowest.

The Nazis persecuted many groups they considered 'undesirable': 6 million Jews, 200,000 Gypsies, 70,000 disabled Germans, and countless political opponents were killed during Nazi rule.
