CBSE Class 9 exam pattern for 2026-27: 80 + 20 per subject, unit-wise marks from the new syllabus, question types, Advanced papers and internal assessment.
Class 9 has no board exam: your school sets and marks the annual exam, following CBSE's scheme. From 2026-27, Class 9 follows a new syllabus aligned with the new NCERT textbooks. Each main subject is 80 marks theory + 20 marks internal assessment, and papers are 3 hours.
Exam Structure
- Total marks — 80 marks (theory) + 20 marks (internal assessment) per subject.
- Duration — 3 hours for each 80-mark paper.
- Question design — 50% competency-focused questions, 20% MCQs and 30% short and long answers, as in Classes 10–12.
- Optional Advanced papers — Mathematics Advanced and Science Advanced: an extra 25-mark, one-hour paper each for students who opt in.
- Grading — a fixed marks scale set by CBSE for schools (91–100 A1 down to 33–40 D).

- Science: Periodic Assessment 5, Multiple Assessment 5, Portfolio 5, Subject Enrichment (practical work) 5.

Preparation Tips Based on the Pattern
- MCQs — practise elimination and quick problem-solving.
- Short answers — be precise, use keywords, stay within word limits.
- Long answers — structure with an introduction, body and conclusion. Include diagrams.
- Case-based — read the passage carefully. The information you need is usually in the text.
- Use the new textbooks — the 2026-27 syllabus follows new NCERT chapters, so older guides and question banks may not match.

Yes. CBSE's assessment design for Classes 9–12 sets every theory paper at 50% competency-focused questions (case-based, source-based and application questions), 20% MCQs and 30% short and long answers. Class 9 exams are set by your school but follow this design.

What is the Advanced paper in Class 9?
From 2026-27, students can opt for Mathematics Advanced and/or Science Advanced. Everyone takes the common 80-mark paper; Advanced students also take an extra 25-mark, one-hour paper at a higher level. The Advanced marks are not added to your total.
