CBSE Class 9 syllabus 2026-27: the new NCERT-aligned syllabus with unit-wise marks for Maths, Science and English, Advanced papers and three languages.
From 2026-27, CBSE Class 9 follows a new syllabus aligned with the new NCERT textbooks. Each main subject is 80 marks in the school's annual exam plus 20 marks internal assessment. Class 9 has no board exam, but it is the base for your Class 10 board exams.

The same textbook is used whether English is your first or second language (R1 or R2); the question papers differ.
Social Science and Hindi
Social Science uses the new NCERT Social Science Part 1 and Part 2 textbooks. CBSE's 2026-27 Class 9 Social Science syllabus says the unit-wise marks "will be provided shortly", so check cbseacademic.nic.in and your school for the marks split in Social Science and Hindi.
What Else Is New in Class 9
- Optional Advanced papers — Mathematics Advanced and Science Advanced add an extra 25-mark, one-hour paper for students who opt in. The first Class 10 board exam with Advanced papers will be in 2028.
- Three languages — this batch studies three languages; the third is assessed by the school only.
- Question design — every theory paper is 50% competency-focused questions, 20% MCQs and 30% short and long answers.
- Grading — Class 9 uses a fixed marks scale (91–100 A1 down to 33–40 D), not the positional grading of the Class 10 board exam.

How to Use the Syllabus
- Work from the new NCERT textbooks — chapter names have changed, so match your study plan to the 2026-27 list above.
- Give the big units more time — Geometry and Algebra are 45 of 80 marks in Maths; World of Living and Matter are 52 of 80 in Science.
- Make short notes as you finish each chapter — they will help you in Class 10 too.
- Don't skip small units — questions can come from any chapter in the syllabus.

What are the Mathematics Advanced and Science Advanced papers?
Optional extra papers, starting with Class 9 in 2026-27. Everyone takes the common 80-mark paper; students who opt for Advanced also take an extra 25-mark, one-hour paper at a higher level. The Advanced marks are recorded separately and not added to your total.
Do Class 9 students study three languages?
Yes. Under CBSE's guidelines of 29 June 2026, the Class 9 batch of 2026-27 studies three languages, at least two of them Indian languages. For this batch the third language is assessed by the school only; there will be no board exam in it in Class 10.
Which subjects should I focus on most?
All subjects count, but Maths and Science need the most regular practice. Because the textbooks are new this year, work through every chapter of the NCERT book and its exercises rather than relying on old guides.
